The only thing cuter than a sloth is a pygmy sloth

20 miles off the coast of Panama in Central America there’s a tiny island that’s home to a unique species of tiny sloths. The pygmy sloths of Escudo Island, Panama have evolved in isolation and shrunk to about half the size of the normal three-fingered sloths found on the mainland. They live in the mangrove swamps where they’re fond of eating a vine that is known to have similar properties to Valium. So they don’t just look stoned, they are stoned. For thousands of years these mellow midgets have hung out on their paradise island, free from predators. But a recent scientific expedition has revealed that there are now less than 100 sloths left as their mangrove home is being destroyed and local fishermen have taken to killing the slow moving stoners and eating them! I love Lucy

Ladies and gentlemen I’d like to introduce you to my namesake, Lucy the sloth. Lucy looks super chilled hanging out in her very own wicker basket but her short life has already seen more drama than a season of the Sopranos. She was having a lovely lazy time hanging out in the jungles of Colombia when she was snatched from her mother by poachers working for the pet trade. But Lucy is a lucky sloth and was rescued and brought to the AIUNAU sloth sanctuary who are pioneering work rehabilitating orphaned babies. So once Lucy is big enough she’ll return to her jungle home with quite a story to tell her worried mom.

Those unaccustomed to high levels of cute may have to shield their eyes from this post which comes with a public health warning. For this is Mira - short for Miracle - seen here doing her best impression of a stuffed toy. As the tiniest orphan to ever arrive at the Aviarios sloth sanctuary Mira’s chances of survival were considered slim. But she’s flourished and is in fact becoming quite a feisty young sloth. Mira’s appetite is big but she remains small and staff at the sanctuary suspect she’s a dwarf. If you feel like giving Mira a helping hand why not visit the sanctuary website and adopt her. Even though she’s small enough they won’t post her to you - sloths should never be kept as pets - but they will send you regular updates of her progress.

Staring down a sloth

Here’s Phil the cameraman on my ‘Meet the Sloths’ documentary in a staring contest with the plucky young Sebastian. Sebastian had just been treated for a skin condition and was a patient in the Aviarios del Caribe sanctuary slothpital but he still beat Phil hands down. Proving that staring down a sloth, even a sick one, is no mean feat.

How to cheer up a sad sloth

It would seem that baby sloths can also suffer a bad attack of the Mondays. Sebastian, the baby in this clip, however is not so much blue from sadness as feeling the cold. He’s an orphan at the sloth sanctuary of Costa Rica. Sloths can’t control their body temperature like other mammals and the Costa Rican nights can be a trifle chilly for an orphaned baby who no longer has his mom to cling to. Especially when, like Sebastian they are a little poorly and undergoing treatment at the sanctuary slothpital. So they came up with the novel idea of making sloth pajamas out of old sports socks to keep him snuggly and warm.

The clip is from my sloth sanctuary documentary ‘Meet the Sloths’. It premieres in the UK on Animal Planet on March 4th 2012 and features some seriously happy sloths. The only person who could possibly shed a tear after watching it is Kristen Bell.

They say it’s the quiet ones you have to watch out for. And it would seem they’re right. Peanut may look the picture of innocence. But behind his angelic eyes and butter-wouldn’t-melt smile lurks the mind of highly-skilled sloth criminal. Here you see Peanut scoping out his next break out. His goal is the bean vault, where all the sloth treats are stored. But this super sneaky bean thief’s methods are ultimately flawed. He always falls asleep after snacking which means he always gets caught.

Meet the sloth whisperer

Judy Arroyo has just about the best job on the planet. She is a sloth whisperer and founder of the Aviarios sloth sanctuary in Cost Rica.

Sloths have extremely kooky biology and conventional medicines aren’t good for them. But twenty years of caring for these eccentric animal’s has taught Judy a few tricks. This clip features her homespun cure for mange - a somewhat bizarre treatment that involves shaving the sloths and covering them in butter. The star spangled bandages are an optional extra.

Young Sir Toby

Today I am pleased to introduce you to a very polite young sloth called Toby. Toby arrived at the sloth orphanage after his mother rejected him. Who knows if she’d been drinking too much fermented coconut juice or what, but she let the tiny newborn Toby fall from her chest and plummet to the ground. When a kindly human passer-by tried to return Toby to his mother she tried to bite him. So Toby was brought to the Aviarios sloth sanctuary to join the other 160 orphaned and injured sloths that live there. You’ll be pleased to hear that because of Toby’s impeccable good manners he made friends quite quickly and is very happy. But Toby could still do with your help. Pretty in Pink: Violet

Violet is a patient at the ‘slothpital’ - the Aviarios sloth sanctuary’s dedicated hospital for sick sloths. Here you can see her hugging her twin brother Sebastian and feeling rather pleased with her jazzy bandages. Sloths are Jedi masters of the hug and these two are inseparable. A star is born!

This is baby Sebastian getting rather curious during the filming of my documentary about the Aviarios sloth sanctuary. Sebastian loved the camera and the camera loved him! You will notice he is rather snazzily dressed for a baby sloth. Sebastian had been a bit poorly and so he was wearing specialised sloth pyjamas made out of sports socks to keep him super snuggly. Oprah, king of the swingers

I’ve just arrived at the Aviarios sloth sanctuary for the final filming leg of my sloth documentary for Animal Planet and been greeted with quite a surprise. Oprah (seen here enjoying a bit of quality bucket time) has been hiding a secret. It turns out that she is actually a he and so Judy and the gang have renamed him Harpo. Keen slothville fans will notice that Harpo bears an uncanny resemblance to fellow fuzzball Mateo and that’s probably no coincidence. They both hail from the mountainous interior and there are suspicions that Harpo and Mateo may even be part of a distinct sub-species which would probably have to be called Choloepus cutie pie.

The Sunday Sloth: Randy, Mr Loverman

The Aviarios sloth sanctuary is happy to care for any sloth in need but they have to adhere to the one house rule. No sex between inmates. This has been particularly tough for Randy, seen here clinging to a poo pole. Randy was the local wild Lothario sloth who’d rock up looking for some action any time one of the sanctuary’s female sloths went into heat. The fact that he could never reach the sexy sirens didn’t stop him patrolling the grounds in the hope of getting close. One day another male turned up and a fight broke out. A very slow fight which saw Randy fall to the ground and break his arm. This of course may well have been a clever ploy by sneaky Randy to bust into the sanctuary and get closer to the girls. He was rescued and had to have a titanium plate fitted. Now he’s the bionic sloth but sadly still no closer to getting any action with the sanctuary’s lady sloths.

The Sunday sloth: smokin’ hot Shilo

Some sloths are definitely more eccentric than others, and Shilo here definitely errs on the kooky side. When eating his beans, Shilo always adopts this characteristic reclining pose, much like a Greek God, which from the side looks distinctly like he’s savouring a fine cigar. Baby sloths are very hard to sex and upon arrival at the Aviarios sloth sanctuary Shilo was mistaken for a girl. But as you can see from his let-it-all-hang-out lunch pose, he is in fact a little boy. This early mix-up may account for his willfuly non-conformist nature.
